Slam Dunked!

Summer 2024 Challenges

This morning I slam-dunked into a problem I was not expecting a few days ago. What do you do when you think your next variety of cherries are going to be ready and then are not ready ? The correct answer for some would be buy them from abroad. Of course, it’s a lot easier to just change your mind, which must be an ability for those on the bright side!

The blueberries have come a few days earlier. So let’s just put them in instead. You would not think I need to mention this but as all the slips will say ‘contains cherries’ in the fruit & veg box and fruit bags, it is worth a mention. So just to ding it in.. you will have blueberries instead of cherries this week.

I also forgot to check the final planting of courgettes to see when they would start fruiting… your heart sinks when you see the large oversize ones lying there on Monday morning and you realise you have now doubled the workload. We will have to harvest all those and waste them so that new ones come along. Oversize courgettes are usable but not popular. Sort of opposite of the cherry problem but one tends never to mention it for looking like I messed up… again!

You know, I have been walking past those courgettes for the last two weeks checking the sweetcorn next to them like a shepherd waiting for lambing season to start. I have made a note in my mind to not make this mistake but I won’t get to improve on this situation until next year’s crop now!

The irony of this morning’s observations is that yesterday I was planning on writing about how everything was looking lovely. Well, most things are so let’s take that as a win; still, it does seem easier to write about the problems and tap into some deeper psychological levels.

While the weather has been very acceptable since mid April and I would take it all day long what we have had so far, despite what the weather man keeps saying I am well aware that it could all change during the late summer and autumn and particularly during the winter. So that keeps us grounded but just for a while I have been enjoying walking the fields this last week or so. Seems I get too dreamy when I think it’s going well and I landed with an audible thud this morning.
