Get Some Purple In Your Food!

A little experiment...

This summer I did a little experiment. I thought I would try growing some purple cauliflowers to see what happens - well, after the glorious warm sunny weekend we have just had, some of them are ready sooner than we expected. There is enough for about half the veg boxes this week.

Purple cauliflowers are more nutritionally valuable than their white counterparts due to a higher concentration of vitamins and other elements, and they look quite pretty too. The colouring of these varieties is caused by exposure to sunlight, which causes pigments such as beta-carotene to develop in the cauliflower.

If you want some for next week we just have to hope there will be no frost. We will add them as an extra product to make sure that they are available.

Elsewhere on the farm we have lots more purple veg on the way, such as cabbage, kales, beetroots and onions. The January King Cabbage, which is in the some boxes this week, is tinged with purple through its heart too.

Getting back to basics is the best thing about a healthy diet. The veg box is a great way for us to grow more diverse food for you and make that part of your diet.

I recall, after starting growing for the veg boxes 11 years ago, how boring and ‘samey’ my diet was, always buying the same things from the shops… well, life is much more diverse than what the big shops provide. Your gut biome will thank you for eating more basic foods such as cabbages and the like.

With that note, I am also researching what other products we should add to the online delivery. Perhaps Groobarbs can be a source of many more natural products than just fruit and veg for you.

In the next few weeks, I want to send out a small survey probably by email to find out what you really want to add to your delivery. Have a great week.
