It's okay to fail!
From Struggles to Success: Our Farm Journey
Walking through the spinach, it had all gone yellow. It’s ok, we can put some cabbage in instead... Uh oh, the pigeons have destroyed them… Well, what about the beetroot? Well they’re too small and won’t get any bigger... Ok, the broccoli then; nope, as it’s ‘gone over’ and is brown.
That was the story 10 years ago, when to be honest I didn't know how to grow everything. But knowing I did not know meant we were in an excellent position to find to how to grow things properly and not rely on luck!
Well, I am happy to say this year the beetroot is perfect, the broccoli is the best we have grown on a consistent level each week and the cabbages are lovely. I learned to hand spinach over to Alan and he grows it for me to our exact standard with no pesticides!
The weather is not too bad for veg and berry crops; it will be a few weeks until we really know about the apples and pears. The squash are growing a bit better now it’s a bit warmer and spuds have got over the potato blight disease which was a big worry a month ago.
So all in all we're getting through the season and we should have some good crops going into the autumn. However, the badgers have found the sweetcorn already, although not too much damage just yet, probably because they realise it’s not quite ready!
